2008/09 Accountability Progress ReportAcademic Performance Index (API)The State of California 2009 Accountability Progress Report released September 15, 2009 again placed Murrieta schools among the highest scoring schools in Riverside County. The District's Academic Performance Index (API) score grew 15 points to 827, exceeding the state's goal of 800. Seventeen out of eighteen district schools exceeded the exemplary mark of 800 on the 2009 API Growth report and almost every school noted significant growth over last year's API score. The API is the cornerstone of California's accountability system and the scores are based on the California Standards Tests, the California Achievement Test (CAT/6) and the California High School Exit Exam. API scores are calculated by converting a student's performance on these statewide tests across multiple content areas into points. These points are then averaged across all students and all tests, resulting in the school's or district's API. API scores can range from 200 to 1000 with scores above 800 being the goal for all schools and districts. Academic Performance Indexes are also calculated for subgroups—ethnic minorities, economically disadvantaged, English learners and students with disabilities. These subgroups account for the state's much-discussed “achievement gap.” All subgroups in the District made significant gains. These results are an indicator that we truly are committed to student success and district and school site administrators look carefully at student achievement data to analyze the scores by school, by sub-group, and by individual student so we can further refine the educational program to meet the needs of all students.
